I had always heard that the alleged use of the neurotoxic, potentially lobotomizing poison from the puffer fish bladder came from the vodou traditions of Haiti, as "vodou" itself doesn't exist in africa at all (Vodou is actually a conglomerate religion combined from many traditions in africa including the Ybo, Congo, Dahomey, Gede, Nago, etc., but was not referred to as VODOU until it reached haiti after the slave diaspora). I digress, but I would like some clarification on the origin of the use of the bladder of these adorable fish. Guess it's Google time!

Puffer fish a native delicacy in Japanese culture. Unfortunately, due to the hard process of removing the poison sack, it is very expensive.

The poison is also used in some African tribes for use in their voodoo traditions, since some puffer fish poison would not kill but induce comma and slow breath rates (hence, people might think he was actually dead). Due to the slow breath rate, the brain is damaged hence amnesia may set in, causing people to think that the person is a zombie.
